Artist Spotlight – Archan Nair

Archan Nair

Archan Nair is a self-taught visual, digital artist, and illustrator, specializing in mixed media, illustration, and digital art. Originally from New Delhi, India, Nair takes influence from his roots using lots of colors, intricate designs and patterns, and incorporating various animals and insects into his work. His visual expressions are part of a journey which is impacted by the mysteries of our existence and how every action, emotion, and our interconnectedness in a universal scale sets a chain of reactions.

The DNA life came across Archan Nair’s artwork through his Instagram, @archannair. His intricate and detailed work stuck out to us so much, we invited him to collaborate on an art show in NYC last year.  We’ve remained in contact since then and have recently collaborated on a limited edition enamel pin derived from one of Archan’s original designs.  To celebrate the release of Archan’s new merch, we caught up with him for an interview to see what really inspires him.

Why art?

Existence, every experience, every knowing and the awareness of each waking sleeping and dream state is nothing but magical, and overflowing with expressions of creativity. So for my everything we do is art.. and the very act of creating through this body mind brings me so much joy and peace and thrill. Every moment is a moment of so much learning and awe, and to be able to share it with everyone is just beyond everything!

What does your creative process look like?

I usually take different directions with each new work, but I sketch and draw when I wake up every morning to kick-start the day. Usually I would start sketching a composition and let everything organically and spontaneously flow. I love switching and experimenting between different tools and mediums.  Sometimes I would sketch out a complete drawing and go crazy with the details getting lost in the process. Other times it would be a super spontaneous quick process more like speed painting. I love how every artwork can take you into a journey, the process is like going in an adventure, having an experience and learning. its so exciting this way!

What do you hope others see when they look at your body of work?

I really try not to have any expectations, but I hope it triggers an emotion positive or negative and most of all makes them question existence , who we are and why are we here. I hope that we are a collective become more conscious and as a creative organism it is our responsibility to help each other understanding that aspect about us.

If you had the ability to create anything what would your dream project be?

Anything? I would love to create new worlds through the power of imagination .. just imagine and it manifests. and then I could create civilizations, creatures, nature.. wow! Just thinking about it gives me a rush! thank you for this question!
