Glass has always fascinated me, hard brittle transparent substance that can shape shift. Sydney-based artist Ben Young takes my fascination to another level by creating exotic sculptures made of layered glass. Inspired by his New Zealand origins and the feeling of being surrounded by water, Young first starts his process by drawing and hand cut from a sheet float glass made for windows, then laminated layer upon layer to produce the final form. He creates models, draws templates, and custom jigs then cuts the layers with a hand-tool. “I love watching the two-dimensional shapes evolve into three-dimensional creations and the different way the light plays inside the glass. I love the liquid qualities the glass brings with it. It enables me to play with lighting and watch the glass react.” Check out more work from Ben Young below.
